Weekly Update

Important Info.  
  • Math MAP Testing for fourth grade students starts tomorrow, May 1st until May 3rd. It is important that students get a good night's sleep these next couple of days and nice, healthy breakfasts in the mornings! Phones and other personal devices are not allowed in the testing room and will be locked up in a safe place during testing.  We enjoyed a few MAP treats, but will have to wait to see what is in our "mystery box" until after MAP! 



  • We are thrilled to announce the Long School Talent Show: Long's Got Talent!
    The talent show will be during school on May 23rd and parents are welcome to attend.  Forms should already be signed and turned in.  T
    ry-outs are after school tomorrow from 3:30-4:30 for third, fourth, and fifth grade students. 
  • As a reminder for Strings students, this Thursday, May 4th is the 4th grade all-district rehearsal.  Rehearsal is scheduled from 9:15-11:00am in the district auditorium. 
  • On Monday, May 15th, we will head to the lead mines in Bonne Terre, Missouri for our final field trip!  Please make sure to turn in permission slips and money.
  • Field Day is Friday, May 19th.  This year we will have the parents lead the students from station to station and the teachers will be running the stations.  There will be 3 time slots to choose from: morning (8:30am-12pm), afternoon (12:30-3pm), or all day (8:30am-3pm).  Please use this link to sign upSignUpGenius
  • Long's Grant's Farm Night has been rescheduled to May 19th. Our Cardinal's game night is May 31st!

We are working on our final drafts of our Fox essays!  It would be helpful for students to bring in their devices since our cart computers are being used for MAP testing throughout the building.  We will not be taking a spelling test until after MAP testing. 

Reading
In Reading we continue to meet in book clubs and reading groups.  We also continue to close read texts, looking for theme, author's craft, mood, vocabulary, figurative language, character traits, and more.  

Math
We are now reviewing all big topics taught this year and practicing math skills for the MAP test.  This includes long multiplication and division, fractions, solving multi-step word problems, geometry, etc. 

Science
This past week we started our last Science unit, Forces and Motion, with a lab!  Students calculated the speed it took to chew bubble gum!  They had a blast.

Important Info.  
  • MAP Testing for fourth grade students starts TOMORROW, April 24th, with ELA testing.  We will conclude the ELA portion of the test the following day on Tuesday the 25th.  Our Math portions of the test will run from May 1st-3rd. It is important that students get a good night's sleep these next couple of weeks and nice, healthy breakfasts in the mornings!  In addition, please make sure that students have their personal headphones available for testing.  Phones and other personal devices are not allowed in the testing room and will be locked up in a safe place during testing.

Junior Achievement/Science
We had our final Junior Achievement lesson this past week.  Students played a game where they had to trade resources with other groups/"countries."  In trading resources, they were able to build a (paper) computer.  And... Mr. Reinhardt surprised the students with Pretzel Boys!   The students had a blast.  Thank you very much for teaching us these past five weeks, Mr. Reinhardt!  We will be starting our last Science unit on forces and motion this week.  This unit has some fun labs!

Weekly Update

Writing/Spelling
We are continuing to draft our "Fox" essays!  It would be helpful for students to bring in their devices since our cart computers are being used for MAP testing throughout the building.  The next Spelling test is this Friday, April 21st.  We will then be taking a spelling break until after MAP testing (see our schedule below in "Other Important Info."). 

Reading
In Reading we continue to meet in book clubs and reading groups.  We also continue to close read texts, looking for theme, author's craft, mood, vocabulary, figurative language, character traits, and more.  

Math
We are now reviewing all big topics taught this year and practicing math skills for the MAP test (see test dates below).  This includes long multiplication and division, fractions, solving multi-step word problems, etc. 

Social Studies/Junior Achievement/Science
Our Missouri projects are due at the end of the day tomorrow.  I can't wait to post the final products to display all the students have learned about Missouri!  We will then move on to our last Science unit on forces and motion.  Also, this past week in our Junior Achievement lesson, we got to use a business fortune teller!

    Weekly Update

    Writing/Spelling
    Students did another awesome job in close reading the book "Fox" this past week!  Students also created their thesis statements for their essays, most related to a character or theme of the book.  For example, "Dog is a good friend" or, "Perseverance is a theme in the book 'Fox.'"  They have some amazing ideas!  The next Spelling test has been pushed back to Friday, April 21st.  

    Reading
    In Reading we continue to meet in book clubs and reading groups.  We also continue to close read texts, looking for theme, author's craft, mood, vocabulary, figurative language, character traits, and more.  

    Math
    The Chapter 12 Test on metric measurement is this Thursday, April 13th.  Students will receive the study guide tomorrow, and they can use the chart we used as a reference in class (below) on the test.  After this chapter, we will be reviewing all big topics taught this year!


    Social Studies/Junior Achievement
    We have finished reading about Missouri's resources and Missouri today.  We are working on a short Missouri project this week.  They are due next Tuesday, April 18th. This past week in our Junior Achievement lesson, we got to play a game called "Hot Dog Stand."  We kept track of money that we spent and money that we made with our business throughout the game.  Then we did the math to figure our profit or loss.  It was a lot of fun!

    • MAP Testing for fourth grade is currently scheduled for April 24th and 25th for ELA and May 1st-3rd for Math.  Although these dates are not likely to change much, there could be a small change made to the schedule as more information becomes available.   Please try not to make any appointments on these days.  Also, please make sure that students have their headphones available for testing.
    • There will be no school on Friday, April 14th.

    Weekly Update

    Writing/Spelling
    Students did an awesome job this week close reading the book, "Fox!"  They were analyzing main characters, brainstorming possible themes, and noting the author's craft.  I was impressed!  Take a look at some of our notes below. This week we will continue to dig deeper!  The next Spelling test will be Thursday, April 13th.  Please note that the test will be on a Thursday because there is no school Friday, April 14th.  


    Reading
    In Reading we continue to meet in book clubs and reading groups.  We have also started close reading, which supports our writing.

    Math
    We are entering the last chapter in our math textbook, Chapter 12 on metric measurement.  After this unit, we will be reviewing all big topics taught this year!  

    Social Studies/Junior Achievement
    In Social Studies, we continue to learn about Missouri's resources.  In our Junior Achievement session last week, students were assigned a region of the U.S. and were told the resources of that region so they could create a business!  Great job, students! 


    Other Important Info.  
    • This week fourth grade started something simply called "Math Switch."  On Mondays and Thursdays, all fourth grade students are divided up into ability levels to get 30 minutes of focused and targeted math practice on specific learning goals.  So far we have focused on fractions and word problems.  
    • MAP Testing for fourth grade is currently scheduled for April 24th and 25th for ELA and May 1st-3rd for Math.  Although these dates are not likely to change much, there could be a small change made to the schedule as more information becomes available.   Please try not to make any appointments on these days.  Also, please make sure that students have their headphones available for testing.
